Checking the status of an amended return with the IRS has gotten easier with a new web tool.
Amended Returns filed with the IRS on paper can take up to 12 weeks from the date the IRS receives it to be processed. Taxpayers that filed their original tax returns early during tax season, only to receive additional corrected information that required the taxpayer to file amended returns, may receive notices regarding balances on their returns. The IRS may have processed the original return quickly, but before processing the amended return, their computer may send the taxpayer a notice.
Taxpayers may track the status of their amended return using a new website. Amended returns show up in the IRS tracking system in about 3 weeks from the date of receipt. In order to to check the status, the taxpayer would go to irs.gov and click on “Where’s My Amended Return”.
The tool provides the status for the current amended return and those up to three prior years. In order to use the tool you will need your tax identification number (social security number), date of birth and zip code.
